PRODUCT REVIEW: Ailunce Retevis HD2 & HA1G Handheld Radios
In the off-roading community, nothing is more important, more vital, and more essential than a radio. In fact, it’s the one piece of gear that you never want to be without! Over the years, the market has been inundated with many types, brands, styles, and sizes. In the old days, Civilian Band or CB radios were the go-to forms of communication. They were cheap, and fairly easy to use but were not without their flaws. Nowadays, General Mobile Radio Service or GMRS is the new kid on the block. GMRS radios operate on the much “sweeter” Ultra High Frequency or UHF band, and their power output eclipses that of CB. All that means is that GMRS radios have better range and offer better transmitting quality over CB, period.
The good people at Ailunce were generous and gifted us two of their most popular GMRS radios, the Ailunce Retevis HD2 and HA1G IP67 Waterproof handheld radios, free of charge. They asked of us only one simple request: Take them out, put these radios through their paces, beat them if you have to, and tell your followers what you think. No fancy product plug but a genuine, God-honest review, and we must say these radios did not disappoint. Ailunce radios are hitting the market and competing against more common brands like Baofeng and Midland. Right out of the box, we quickly realized that the radios required programming before they could be used. We’re not gonna lie, if you aren’t a radio “guru” this initial phase will be frustrating. Fortunately, Ailunce has a dedicated technical support page and forums that have information and how-to guides. We had to reach out for support from a Ailunce representative, who provided links to the necessary software, making the setup process smooth and manageable. Once programmed, we were eager to put them to the test in various challenging environments.

Out in the trail.
Our first test took place in a snowy landscape. We weren't gentle with the radios, as we frequently communicated while driving through the snow, and even got a few vehicles stuck along the way. The frigid weather, high altitude. and flying snow posed a significant challenge, the water-proof radios worked as intended, no issues were reported after enduring such harsh conditions. Next, we ventured to the sandy dunes of El Paso, TX. In true off-road fashion, we intentionally got stuck again, forcing us to step outside and navigate through the blowing sand while relying on the radios. Again, they performed admirably, standing up to the elements without a hitch. A standout feature was the long-range antennas; there were times when our connecting member was over a mile away, yet the communication remained clear and uninterrupted.
One of our favorite functions of these radios is the Bluetooth capability. This feature allowed us to keep the radio close while still being fully engaged in conversations. It proved invaluable, especially when we needed to stay alert to hazards or distress calls while wheeling.

Again, we aren’t radio “gurus”, we’re just off-roaders trying out stuff that we ourselves would use. So here are the things we liked:
Clear and uninterrupted communication. We never had any difficulties talking amongst ourselves.
2. Rugged design. C’mon these things are dust-proof and waterproof. Aside from an 18-wheeler running over them, these things can take a beating!
3. Price. Yes, they were technically free, but we would personally recommend to our members over more expensive brands.
The things we didn’t like:
Programming. Not gonna lie on this one, it was a pain in the a** but after we got them going it was worth it.
Well folks, that’s the verdict. We are thoroughly impressed with the Ailunce Retevis HD2 and HA1G radios. They proved to be durable, reliable, and user-friendly in various outdoor conditions. We wholeheartedly recommend them for anyone looking to enhance their communication during outdoor adventures and don’t want to burn a hole in their pocket. Whether you're tackling snowy trails or sandy dunes, these radios are up to the challenge!
