Rocky Point 4x4 Jam Experience

Our off-road team just returned from an unforgettable trip to Rocky Point, Puerto Peñasco Sonora, and we can't wait to share the highlights! Traveling all the way from Texas, we had the chance to connect with amazing teams from Arizona, Sonora, and plenty of other incredible people along the way.

The drive takes about 8 hours from El Paso so its not bad at all!!! Getting to Mexico, you want to get insurance because realistically your USA insurance only covers 30 miles into Mexico. As long as you carry your vehicles registration you do not need any additional paperwork to get to Mexico. Returning you will need your passport.

Lets start with accommodations. We ourselves stayed at the Palacio De El Mar, found on Vrbo. The condo comes with two bedrooms, an amazing kitchen. Lets focus on the views, you are beachfront, the infinity pool connects to the beach and in high tide it seems as if you were swimming in the open sea. Yeah temperature was low 70s but you could still get in with the heater on. Price was reasonable, $1,300 for the whole week.

Second lets address the elephant in the room, “did you feel safe”? Lets be real you are in Mexico, but as with anywhere else, if you dont look for trouble, trouble wont find you. Nobody bothers you, you are free to travel to and from. The condo itself is gated with securities at the gate. So I had my doors and top removed the whole week.

Food!!!! Aguachiles we had at Mannys Beach House (which was conveniently two lots from the condos) were the best we had. Ask for Guadalajara (named Claudia) or Antonio ask for them and they will hook you up. Heres the best spots in our opinion. For Birria (La Brisas) for Tacos (La Vaca Chenta) for Aguachiles (Mannys Beach House) for Oysters (The Oyster Farm).

The trip kicked off with a registration meeting the day before the event. We received all the necessary information, including our event itinerary, merchandise, and directions for the trails we would conquer together.

The first event took us on a thrilling dune trail, stretching over 65 miles. While 75% of the trail was manageable, the remaining 25% presented a true challenge. The loose sand caught many riders off guard, particularly those who were newbies. A few struggled due to over-inflated tires and having traction control engaged. However, the way the event was managed was impressive. With over 58 rigs participating, we had a leader guiding the pack. Whenever someone got stuck, the leader would take those who passed to a designated checkpoint, while their teammate would step up to lead the next group. The line never stopped moving for those who didn’t get stuck, and support was always on hand to pull, push, and spot riders through the tough spots.

On the second day, we ventured to a hidden beach, joined by over 50 rigs. There was a bit of confusion at first, as it seemed like the second team had some communication issues. When we inquired about their radio channels, they replied, “Our radios are different from the ones y’all use?” It was a little surprising since we made sure to bring two types of radios for everyone to use. Once we got rolling, about 20 rigs successfully navigated the first obstacle, pushing ahead without a clear idea of where we were headed. The remainder of us followed, hoping for the best!

Despite a few hiccups, the event ended on a high note as we gathered with new friends for some well-deserved beers. The trails we explored along the beach were stunning, and we enjoyed delicious food that capped off our incredible adventure.

All in all, this trip to Rocky Point was a fantastic experience filled with challenges and camaraderie. We can’t wait for the next off-road adventure! 🏜🚙
